Ambassadors of the Member States of the European Union in Greece

visited the LNG Terminal in Alexandroupolis

The Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal in Alexandroupolis (FSRU Alexandroupolis) was visited by Ambassadors of the Member States of the European Union and of Switzerland and Norway, in Greece, on Wednesday September 18, 2024, at the initiative of the Embassy of Hungary in Athens, Hungary being the Member State that holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the current semester, from July 1 to December 31, 2024.

The Managing Director of Gastrade S.A., Mr. Kostis Sifnaios, stated in this regard:

“I want to thank the Ambassadors of the Member States and their representatives for their visit to the FSRU and of course the Hungarian Embassy in Athens for the honorable initiative. We are only a few days away from the start of commercial operations of the Terminal on October 1st, a date that will officially mark the entry into a new era for the role of Alexandroupolis and Greece in the energy map of the entire Southeast and Central Europe with significant opportunities to diversify their sources of supply, especially after the recent agreement concerning the commitment of ¼ of the capacity of the Terminal by the American company Venture Global LNG”.

During the visit, the Ambassadors were briefed on the operation of the Terminal, its strategic objectives, its geopolitical importance as well as on the high levels of safety and environmental standards with which it operates. The initiative of the “Vertical Gas Corridor”, of which the Alexandroupolis FSRU is a part, was also discussed. This is a vital initiative in strengthening the energy security of Southeast and Central Europe and its independence from Russian natural gas by providing a new integrated route to import alternative natural gas supplies from Greece throughout the region up to Hungary.
